Welcome to PigPenny.com home of the Pig PennyBig News! I have decided to announce that one of the New Coin designs for 2008 will feature the Legendary Smokey Joe's BBQ of Lexington, NC . Owner Kaffee Cope approved the artwork, and we all look forward to producing the new design. Started in 1972, Smokey Joe's remains a local favorite, and is one of the few True Pit Cooked BBQ Restaurants in Lexington. The Southern BBQ design ( Pig Fishing in a Boat ) is now officially retired as of June 09, 2008. It has become obosolete since the restaurant was recently sold, and the name has been changed. There was no last minute rolling to stock up on the coins. I decided to just use what I had on hand. So while all the coins are still available at this time. No more will be made. What's a Pig Penny? It is an elongated, pressed, squished, smashed, or mashed coin made from a real copper pre 1982 Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, or Presidential Dollar. They are made as a souvenir of Lexington, NC. Currently there are 3 different designs. The original features art drawn by local artist Don Rea Padon. The other two feature the logos of Smiley's Lexington Barbeque and Southern Barbecue, both of Lexington, NC.
